What is oxidization and is it permanent?
Oxidization is the process of creating a colored finish (a shiny gun-metal / blackish color) on a piece of sterling silver jewelry. It is a surface treatment used to speed up the natural tarnishing of the metal and will change over time to create a patina that is unique to each individual which can depend on several factors including body chemistry and handling. Our deep engraved studs have been first oxidized and then polished on the face of the earring to highlight the design.
To prolong the time the face of your earrings will be free from tarnish, store your jewelry in an air tight container and avoid exposing it to chemicals, lotions or makeup. Tarnish will naturally occur over time when the metal reacts with the air and moisture in your environment. Clean the face of your sterling silver studs with polishing cloths formulated to remove tarnish to keep them bright and shiny.
